Who is this qualification for?
The qualification. ‘Supporting Young People Leaving Care in Post-16 Education’, will enhance and recognise the skills and knowledge of staff working to support young people leaving care and continuing their education with training providers, school sixth forms, further or higher education.
It is available to practitioners aged 18 years or older.
What units are included within the suite?
There are 3 mandatory units.
- Communication skills in Helping Relationships
- Support Young People who are Looked After or Leaving Care
- Preparing for the role of a Designated Member of Staff (DMS) for Young Care Leavers in Post-16 Education
What level is this qualification?
This is a Level 3 qualification. Learners are assessed in terms of whether they have met the assessment criteria specified in the units of assessment, and are required to collate a portfolio of evidence.
Are There Additional Resources to Support this Qualification?
Yes! January 2023 will see the launch of LASER’s e-learning package for staff working with care experienced young people. The e-learning course, which will be hosted on LASER’s Znanja platform, consists of 3 modules:
- Support Young People who are Looked After or are Leaving Care
- Preparing for the Role of Designated Member of Staff for Young Care-Leavers in Post-16 Education
- Communication Skills in Helping Relationships
Each module contains learning material relevant to the sector, links to helpful websites, documents, videos and interactive tasks to embed learning. The e-learning course can be completed as part of your CPD hours, or to support the qualification.

How do I deliver this qualification as a centre?
To offer this qualification, you must be a Recognised LASER Centre. For further information about gaining recognition or working in partnership with a Recognised Centre please visit our website. Existing Recognised Centres must complete a New Course Notification Form before starting to deliver the qualification.
